I know the overwhelming majority of my fellow South Africans are jubilant at the prospect of a Joe Biden/Kamala Harris presidency and I know this sentiment is shared by the majority of people around the world. As the only Western leader to express any interest at all in the plight of this country’s commercial farmers and their workers, I am not sure why most whites here are so opposed to him, but they are. Unfortunately, I do not feel the same sense of elation; maybe they know something that passes me by, and I dearly hope that is the case, but I see it all very differently. I, in my Afrocentric way, see his eclipse as part of a process that came into play after WW II.
Trump, behind the big ego, and the brash, abrasive style of delivery, believes strongly in traditional American values which he credits with having made his country ‘great’. The values he refers to are, broadly speaking, the same as the ones that formed the bedrock of what is loosely referred to as Western Civilisation underpinned by Christian fundamentals.
When Africa was colonised, those dispatched to the ‘Dark Continent’ were similarly imbued with these same sentiments regarding the task that lay before them in ’civilising’ what they saw as an ‘uncivilised’ territory. Most of the new colonisers looked to Christian missionaries who constituted the vanguard of European settlement in Africa, to provide the lead in the arduous process they set about tackling. If one gauges the colonial period in terms of population growth and a reduction in violence then it must be declared a success but people possessed of the same mentality as those who today celebrate the Trump demise, saw it differently. They were strongly of the view that the tenets that buttressed this so called ‘Christian Civilisation’ had no place in Africa, were brutally imposed, and the newly applied systems of governance were a racially motivated abomination that should be ended immediately. They prevailed and the decolonisation process commenced in the Gold Coast (renamed Ghana) in 1957. The world cheered.
With that signal event the race was on to abandon Africa, apologise for the rude intrusion, and head home to Europe. When the Portuguese, the last European colonial power relinquished their possessions in 1975 the world cheered. When Robert Mugabe took power in 1980 the world cheered. When Nelson Mandela ended white rule in South Africa in 1994 the world cheered.
I now look at sub-Saharan Africa and see hunger stalks many lands, lawlessness and violence is endemic, and the vast majority of Africans live in grinding poverty while a tiny politically connected kleptocratic clique has amassed obscene amounts of wealth. So I feel justified in asking what all the cheering was about.
Regrettably, the Europe the colonisers returned to, engulfed in a wave of ‘white guilt’, was also ditching its traditional values and beliefs and creating more ‘inclusive’ societies which welcomed alien religions, cultures and systems of governance in a frantic bid to appease the myriad critics who identified so called ‘white supremacy’ as the crime of the century. The erstwhile imperialists looked to salve their consciences in an exercise of socio-political self-flagellation, by asking to be colonised themselves and then generously facilitating the process. In this they appear to have been successful and thanks to rapid population growth among the immigrant community, the Western European powers along with the UK are dismantling the systems that brought them global influence and prosperity and appear on course to self-destruction. The same people that cheered decolonisation in Africa are celebrating this process while exhorting the political leadership to expedite it faster.
One of Barack Obama’s first actions on entering the Oval Office was to remove the bust of Winston Churchill to make clear his disdain for one that country’s great prime ministers and Britain’s imperial legacy. His administration shared the same approach as their European allies and applied many of the same policies in an effort to make the United States more ethnically diverse through opening borders and encouraging the flow of illegal immigrants. Obama, a Muslim, treated traditional American values with contempt.
Against this backdrop Trump came to power and set about trying to reverse the destructive trend by sealing the borders and championing traditional American mores and values; he declared himself an unabashed American patriot and expressed pride in his country and what it had achieved; he promptly became the most pilloried and persecuted president in the history of the United States. His detractors appear to have won the day. Millions of his compatriots and millions more around the world are celebrating his demise.
Out of office the road ahead for President Trump is a rocky one. His persecutors are far from finished with him and will punish him for his impertinence. Thanks to a blatantly biased justice system that acts selectively, putting some like the Clintons beyond the reach of the law, Trump has incurred its wrath and he will face a criminal trial. In a country where aggressive prosecutors invariably win there is every likelihood of a conviction of some sort and a prison sentence.
He may go down in history as the last Western leader who stood fast for Christian values and traditions and like the quiet man from Nazareth, he will pay dearly for it.
Unlike most other commentators, i vehemently applaud the demise of Donald Chump and I hope he and his band of armed lemmings will soon leave the stage.
What an embarrassing sight for Americans to watch, let alone the rest of the democratic world. The headline in Harare last Sunday put Trump and Mugabe on a par – not far wrong. Not that I have to study all the details, but my question : Is he not a cheating, lying, greedy individual interested mainly in himself?
He cares nought for the Planet, the general population under Covid threat, the blacks / coloureds who are asking for a review of how they are treated, or anything else apart from perhaps the economy if it protects him and his base.
Do not even mention Ian Smith in the same breath – honour and ethics versus greed and self interest.
Hannes you are wiser than that. And spare us the conspiracy theories. Let’s make sure Biden – Harris do the simple things truly and well – FREE, FAIR and FIRM.

Hannes, the “white guilt” you speak of is an interesting phenomenon. Whilst much of it is driven by people of colour over-correcting the wrongs of the past, much of the brouhaha has been orchestrated by need of the woke snowflake generation to appease some sort of inner drive, possibly misinformation, more likely inexperience in true camaraderie and the real ethos of human interaction. An obsession with Social media does not impart this.
The problem with this self serving purge is that it is hijacked by malcontents bent on political agenda.
I read an interesting article by Tiberiu Dianu, a Romanian critic, who calls this “the Rhodesia effect”. Very well worth reading in light of your article and the juxtapositions to what is tranpiring in the USA aligned with what we Rhodesians have had to suffer….

Thanks for this very enlightening and insightful article. As I see it, more than half of the world is already being governed by the immensely powerful Swamp without even being aware of it. The Swamp is the unelected government of the western world but aims to become the unelected government of the entire world. It owns the main stream media and just about every major world institution and has its people in every political party in the western world and much of the eastern world also. It owns the Democrat Party in the US and has its people in the Republican Party ready to do its bidding. The Swamp has been choosing Presidents in America for decades now, not to mention leaders of nations worldwide. It is a global unelected dictatorship and it’s choice to lead America is Joe Biden. It put Barak Obama there before him to do it’s bidding and meant for him to be succeeded by Hilary Clinton who was supposed to continue doing it’s bidding, hence the uproar when Trump came along with totally opposing plans for the USA and won the Presidency in 2016. Joe hardly lifted a finger for his so called campaign – the Swamp did it all for him. If the Swamp wins and it’s man is inaugurated in January it may decide to pardon Trump in a rare bi-partisan show of mercy meant to unite the intolerably polarized US electorate. Otherwise it may decide to put him in jail in a show of power and revenge. It is after all a dictatorship and will do as it pleases.

Trump had the media so pitched against him, that the electorate felt obliged to go with the stories of the day. Donald Trump was the news for five years and the media who propped him up in the first place, are the same that brought him down.

Excellent summary of the tragic timeline of negative political events Hannes. I only differ with your opinion in one point:

Perhaps, but I would suggest that title would go to Ian Douglas Smith. Especially remembering that our Rhodesian politicians, including Prime Minister Ian Smith, received no salary or expenses (except cost of a train ticket if travelling to Parliament but not a plane ticket!) and had to run real businesses in the real world.
If I may also add, none of the above events and time lines you mentioned were happenstance!

Solemnity of Christ the King
Mr. President,
Allow me to address you at this hour in which the fate of the whole world is being threatened by a global conspiracy against God and humanity. I write to you as an Archbishop, as a Successor of the Apostles, as the former Apostolic Nuncio to the United States of America. I am writing to you in the midst of the silence of both civil and religious authorities. May you accept these words of mine as the “voice of one crying out in the desert” (Jn 1:23).
As I said when I wrote my letter to you in June, this historical moment sees the forces of Evil aligned in a battle without quarter against the forces of Good; forces of Evil that appear powerful and organized as they oppose the children of Light, who are disoriented and disorganized, abandoned by their temporal and spiritual leaders.

The Real World

Only because he thought it would get him votes, which it did in 2016. I wonder how many Christian voters he lost by 2020, after they learned more about who he really is? A photo op of him holding up a bible, to cover for his distinct lack of Christian values as a person, wasn’t enough to reverse the trend. The only god worshipped by Trump in money: everything else is up for grabs.
I don’t believe Trump went into politics for the money; I think he did it for his country and I fear he will be penalised for it. He posed a problem to many who are entrenched behind the political curtain but wield enormous influence through financing political campaigns. Trump did a lot of it on his own and was therefore less dependent on those who look to manipulate the presidency.
Do you think God only use good Christian men and women to do His will?? Have you never heard of people used at the right time for the right reason? King Cyrus of Persia to name one. And do you think Biden has a better background? No one voted for Trump because he is a Christian they voted for him because of his Christian values. Even atheist recognise Christian values as a better choice of existence.

I am very sorry to say that people voted against Trump, not out of opposition to his policies, but rather out of thier distain for the man. The World may yet learn, to their own peril and demise, that the loss of America as we know it under Trump will place them under the financial and military yoke of China and to some extent Russia. Socialism, Marxism and Communism are only sustainable as long as other people’s money pays for it, to paraphrase M. Thatcher. I weep for my adoptive country and the treachery that has brought us to this day. I only hope we can climb back out of this pit and return to democracy and the Republic, as envisioned and governed by the American Constitution.
Yes I agree Simon; he does not have the charm and personal appeal of a Ronald Reagan; a hard man to like but he’s from New York and they make them like that there.
A 30,000-foot look at history often reveals a scarred landscape but also previously hidden perspectives. This piece is bang on. A future of one world government and a New World Order as detailed in the UNSDAgenda2030 is a worrisome destination. Welcome to the redefinition of personal rights and liberty.

I agree. When the wrath of the swamp and all those who have been beguiled by it, including the product of what I call the 30-year Marxist Saul Alinsky plan – the mis-educated youth of America by communists who were parachuted into the system, fell upon Trump and his own, his persecution was set and has raged for four years.
It began with the University of Columbia and its tendrils spread throughout the education system. This is a long-term project. Mr Trump is regarded as being enormously resilient to have weathered such an unprecedented storm of hatred. Does one blame him for developing survival instincts, as he took to Twitter to deliver his responses & inform the nation. I salute and support him, even if I wouldn’t take him home to Mum!? The World needs this man for the moment. May I add that for all the talk of him having lost support/popularity, check the amazing 70+million votes. That’s a significant increase. Consider the iniquitous fraud and dishonesty he faces.
